1/20/2018: WOMEN'S MARCH

In Morristown
There was a very large turnout at the Morristown March, whose theme was “Power To The People.” Nancy Hedinger, President of LWV NJ, picture below, gave a rousing speech before the March that highlighted many issues of concern to the League and other March participants, including voter registration, getting voters to the polls and directed at the LWV’s basic purpose-“making democracy work.”  Our Teaneck League was well represented and marched behind the LWVNJ banner.

The March, with thousands of participants, started at Town Hall and ended on the Morristown Green, where dozens of speakers, including Governor Phil Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Elizabeth Meyer, founder of the Women’s March on New Jersey, called for the crowd to continue to demonstrate their energy, efforts and political engagement.

NYC Women's March -- crowd jammed Central Park West from 61st Street up past 86th Street!  We heard a large number of speakers at the rally including women who spoke about immigration reform, DACA and its effects on their families and friends, health care needs, sexual and physical abuse experiences, job inequality, etc. as well as Rosie Perez, Whoopi Goldberg, etc.

Then we marched down past Trump International Hotel to 59th St, east to 6th Avenue then down to 45th Street.  The streets were lined with more supporters with signs (including apartment windows off Central Park North!) and a small pro-Trump rally on Columbus circle protected by many cops.

The mood was upbeat, signs were creative, and there were MANY young people mixed into the crowd along with a huge diversity of men and women.
